Some days you wake up and simply decide that you are not a person today. You are a small, blanket-shaped creature who lives on the couch, eats crackers in the dark and answers to nobody. Congratulations: you have entered goblin mode. We're not here to talk you out of it. We're here to make sure you do it properly.
A good do-nothing day is a lot like a good nap: it looks effortless, but the setup matters. Below are 15 goblin mode essentials, sorted into a few loose categories, so your next lazy day is cozy instead of crunchy. Some are things you can buy, plenty are free, and none of them require you to put on real pants.
The nest: blankets, layers and things to burrow into
Every goblin needs a nest. The couch is ideal, the bed is acceptable, and the floor in front of the heater is a bold, valid choice. What turns a surface into a nest is layers.
1. A soft fleece throw. This is the foundation of the entire goblin lifestyle. You want something light enough to drag from room to room like a cape and soft enough that you forget your inbox exists.
2. A wearable blanket. A regular blanket falls off the moment you reach for the snacks. A wearable blanket comes with you. It is basically a sleeping bag with arms, and it is the single most goblin item ever invented.
3. Too many pillows. Free, if you raid the bed. Build a back wall, an arm rest and one spare pillow to hug like a sad Victorian.
4. Fuzzy socks or slippers. Cold feet are the number one threat to a successful do-nothing day. Neutralize them.
The vibe: light, smell and sound
Goblins don't do overhead lighting. Overhead lighting is for dentists and people who file taxes on time. You want a low, warm glow, like you live inside a mushroom.
5. Warm, dim lighting. A lamp with a warm bulb, fairy lights or color-changing LED strips set to a soft moss-green or amber. Turn the big light off. Feel your shoulders drop.
6. A cozy candle. A good-smelling candle tells your brain "we're not doing anything today" faster than any productivity app ever told it to do something. Never leave it burning unattended, obviously, even if you're very deep in a nap.
7. Headphones for the outside world. Roommates, leaf blowers and that one neighbor who drills things on Sundays can all be silenced with a decent pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Pair with a rain sounds playlist and you're basically in a cave.
8. A comfort show you've seen 11 times. Not a new show. A new show requires focus. You want something where you already know the plot and can fall asleep in the middle without consequences.
The snack hoard
The goblin is, at heart, a snack-based creature. The trick on a do-nothing day is to set up your hoard before you get comfortable so you aren't forced to rejoin society to fetch crackers.
9. A snack variety box. A mix of salty, sweet and crunchy means you never have to make a decision more complicated than "this one or that one."
10. A giant water tumbler. Yes, even goblins hydrate. A big insulated cup with a straw means you can drink while horizontal and refill approximately once per season of your show.
11. Something warm to sip. Cocoa, tea, coffee, soup in a mug. If you keep getting distracted and letting it go cold (you will), a mug warmer is a small, smug upgrade.
The low-effort entertainment station
12. A lap desk. If you are going to doom-scroll, read or play games from the couch, a lap desk gives your laptop or snack plate a stable surface so nothing slides into the blanket abyss.
13. A book that asks nothing of you. Cozy mysteries, romance, fantasy with a map in the front. Reading in goblin mode should feel like a warm bath, not homework.
14. A cozy game. Farming, fishing, decorating tiny houses, befriending animals. Anything with gentle music and zero timed puzzles.
Bonus essential: keep a pair of fuzzy socks or slippers by the couch at all times. Future you will thank present you.
The most important essential: permission
15. Permission to do nothing. This one is free and it's the hardest to get. Hustle culture has trained a lot of us to feel guilty the moment we stop being useful. But rest isn't something you earn after you've finished everything, because you will never finish everything. Rest is just part of being a person (or a goblin).
So put your phone on do not disturb, tell the group chat you are "unavailable for being perceived," and let the day be soft. Nobody is grading you.
How to set up a goblin mode day in 10 minutes
- Change into your softest clothes. Hoodie, sweats, the shirt with a hole in it. All allowed.
- Build the nest: blanket, pillows, wearable blanket within arm's reach.
- Turn off the big light and switch on lamps, LEDs or a candle.
- Stock the hoard: water, a warm drink and two or three snacks.
- Queue the comfort show or open the cozy game.
- Phone on do not disturb. Burrow. You're done.
That's it. That's the whole guide. Go forth and be gloriously unproductive. If you want to level up your setup, check out our rot day survival kit and our guide to building a cozy gaming or reading nook.
